[In the Name Of Allah the most beneficent the most merciful]
IS SMOKING HARAAM ?
First of all no man are allowed to make anything Haraam or Halal, not even any Prophets or Messengers, except Allah Himself.
The Quran 6:57
Say: "For me, I (work) on a clear sign from my Lord, but ye reject Him. What ye would see hastened, is not in my power. The command rests with none but Allah. He declares the truth, and He is the best of judges."
The Quran 48:23
That has been the Way of Allâh already with those who passed away before. And you will not find any change in the Way of Allâh
The Quran 10:59
Say 'Do you see that which God has provided for you, you make some of it Unlawful (Haram) and some of it Lawful (Halal)?. Say 'Did God allow you to do this? Or do you tell lies about God?"
The Quran 66:1
O Prophet! Why holdest thou to be forbidden that which Allah has made lawful to thee? Thou seekest to please thy consorts. But Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
The Quran 5:87
O ye who believe! Forbid not the good things which Allah hath made lawful for you, and transgress not, Lo! Allah loveth not transgressors.
It is true that cigarette smoking is bad thing for health and for wealth . But I cannot say it is HARAAM- Since this authority is only belong to ALLAH. Therefore HARAAM is what Allah have forbidden.
However this word "HARAAM" has very deep meaning. Moreover no one has any evidence to say that, someone will be punished or will go to hell because of smoking cigarette. Please remember it is a known fact that eating too much anything could cause problems, could we then say everything is HARAAM?
Maximum we can say eating too much is unhealthy, but we cannot say it is harram. However those who issue FATWA on cigarettes by saying it is HARAAM they base their decision as on the following
1: Slow Suicide
2: Danger to health
4: Waste of money
[PLEASE NOTE , THE FOLLOWING ARE NOT VIEWS TO ENCOURAGE SMOKING IN ANY SHAPE OF FORM- IT IS SIMPLY TO SAY WE SHOULD NOT ACT AS GOD BY MAKING THINGS HARAM OR HALAL]
The Quran 5:3
Forbidden unto you (for food) are carrion and blood and swine-flesh, and that which hath been dedicated unto any other than Allah, and the strangled, and the dead through beating, and the dead through falling from a height, and that which hath been killed by (the goring of) horns, and the devoured of wild beasts, saving that which ye make lawful (by the death-stroke), and that which hath been immolated unto idols. And (forbidden is it) that ye swear by the divining arrows. This is an abomination. This day are those who disbelieve in despair of (ever harming) your religion; so fear them not, fear Me! This day have I perfected your religion for you and completed My favour unto you, and have chosen for you as religion AL-ISLAM. Whoso is forced by hunger, not by will, to sin: (for him) lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful
Since Din Islam is perfected and completed therefore no one has any authority to add or deleted anything in relation to Islam. Anyway lets deal with there argument one by one
QUOTE 1: SLOW SUICIDE
a) Suicide is indeed Haram. However, it is almost impossible to prove that smoking is decreasing life span.
Since Allah has written the time of death referred to in the Qur'aan as "Ajal" (Fixed Time). Therefore, how can one claim smoking decreases life?
b) Many men have died due to smoking heavily and were confirmed by doctors as smoking being the cause. On the other hand, there are old men at the ages of 80+ who still smoke. This shows it's NOT always cause death
QUOTE 2 : DANGER OF HEALTH
There is high possibility that smoking does harm the health. But The ruling of Haram can not be based on this? Verses such as the following have been used to come to this decision:
"...make not your own hands contribute to your destruction..." (Surah al-Baqarah 2:195);
"...nor kill yourselves..." (Surah al-Nisaa 4:29)
The first verse refers to destroying yourselves and making yourselves weak by not spending in the path of Allah (Jihad) as stated in the early portion of the verse .
Is it fair ? When using this verse as the reason for smoking to be HARAAM, only the middle portion of the verse is used and also in the literal meaning.
The second verse refers to killing each other amongst Muslims as described earlier in the verse . Even if this was the case, besides cigarettes, how many other products are out there that harm your health? Should all this become HARAAM too for this reason?
The conclusion is simple. Islam does not encourage in any way unhealthy products including cigarettes but it will not necessarily become "HARAAM"
QUOTE 3: ADDICTION
Again, although addiction is very dangerous spiritually, physically and financially, the term "Addiction" itself is not enough to rule something HARAAM. Drinks, certain foods and many other things can be addictive to different types of people. Addiction to something can not make something HARAAM generally.
QUOTE 4: WASTE OF MONEY
Allah (swt) clearly states in the Qur'aan regarding Israaf (To use more than necessary). In this case, wasting money. Israaf is HARAAM.
Smoking would not fall under Israaf if one smokes as smoking is the smoker?s choice of provision. If the smoker had excessive amount then it would fall under Israaf.
In the light of the above, the SMOKING is NOT- HARAAM. Neither it is HALAL nor its recommended, but it is best to avoid if possible . I personally hate the smell of it and I have stop smoking long time ago, and would highly encourage people to give up if they can. However since there is some evidence, which indicate SMOKING may cause problem for health then one should consider it. Also I do not neglect any smoker because of their smoking. I am sure you will see some so-called label Muslim and their scholar issuing fatwa and they neglect them smoker, mostly base on so-called medical science advice / theory. Its really funny the medical science sometime keep strong stance on smoking then intoxication. Anyway Allah knows best
